About CYBER F/X® Inc.

The West Coast's Original & Largest 3D Laser Scanning Facility Since 1992

modelCYBER F/X® INC. uses laser scanners for 3D digitizing maquettes, objects, and people, including whole body scans. This reverse engineering data can then be imported into an animation, modeling or CAD/CAM program, or sent to one of our rapid prototyping or CNC-Sculpting™ machines. Designed exclusively by CYBER F/X¨ these custom-built sculpting machines can reproduce that maquette, object, or person in polyurethane foam or machinable wax to any scale desired.

These reproductions are simply phenomenal in appearance, quality, and accuracy, and are in great demand by leading design firms, theme park developers, special effects houses, professional sculptors, production companies, and many others requiring accurately enlarged reproductions of three-dimensional objects.

About Dick Cavdek

From The Company Founder & President

I worked in the motion picture camera business for 10 years designing camera accessories. I was in charge of research and development of these new products and was also doing the cad/cam for the machine shop to cut these parts In 1992 I was awarded a Technical Achievement Award by the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for a lens design that was widely accepted in the industry. Tom Hanks was the MC that night. This is the same organization that awards the Oscars once a year.

One day I was looking at these 5 ton machines cutting metal and I said to myself "it would be great if these machines could cut artwork and sculpture". As luck would have Cyberware, of Monterey, CA had just invented laser scanners for objects. I was one of the first to purchase one and spent months figuring out how to marry the 3D scan data to a CNC (numerically controlled computer) machines. This was not easy as there were and still are literally 100's of software packages out there promising to fulfill the need and many costing over $20,000. This was back when the fastest PC available was a 486 and a SGI (Silicone Graphics) workstation was $25,000. Unfortunately this workstation was the only thing powerful enough to run the software.

So in 1992 I started my company called Cyberscan. Hollywood soon discovered me and the many uses for the data and our machining capabilities. We started scanning for all major films and box office hits requiring 3D data, scans of actors and props and even sculpture enlargement. The need was so great I designed the machines that could actually fabricate a human body and sculpture from the data. My first machine is named the T1000 (from Terminator) as it's the one we built for making the first CNC body of Arnold Schwarzenegger for another film. We still use these machines on a daily basis and they perform as good today as then. Talk about a good design. Back then the only machines large enough to do this were aircraft gantries costing $500k.

Goofy

In 1992 I applied for the company trademark company trademark Cyberscan and was one week away from having it awarded when a small company in the Midwest was making circuit boards called Cyberscan applied for their trademark. They had been in business a few months longer and to avoid a costly legal battle I reluctantly agreed to change my name to Cyber F/X. Unfortunately the word "cyberscan" is now the coined word in the Hollywood for scanning actors and objects.

Our focus is fine art sculpture enlargement for some of the finest sculptors in the world, but we still do motion picture scanning with our mobile big rig trailer when Hollywood calls. None of the other sculpture enlargers do in house scanning and machining and farm the scanning out to services bureaus with no guarantee on were you fall in the line up. They call this a partnership with another company, but all this means to you is another middleman so your work can get done costing you more. Some claim to have scanners and don't do sculpture enlargement because they don't have the CNC machines and others claim to do sculpture enlargement and have no scanning equipment. Don't be fooled and trust your sculpture enlargement to an engraver or toy maker professing years of experience. Cyber F/X is the only one stop shop.
